We Bought a Zoo then We Fed Our Zoo~Monkey Sorbet! #cbias #ilovemyk9

My son’s been off school for spring break the last couple days. We usually try to head out and check out a movie when he’s off, but we decided to stay in and check out We Bought a Zoo from in the comfort of our own living room.

We Bought a Zoo premiered this week on DVD, so I headed to Walmart to pick it up. While I was there I also picked up a few thing to feed our own small zoo. We have a dog, 2 cats and a dozen chickens who call our place home.

I found the movie on a large end cap display in the electronics section. They had DVD’s and DVD-Blu Ray combo packs. They also had a special Walmart edition with special features.

I decided we’d need a yummy snack for our movie watching experience, so I thought I’d make some Monkey Sorbet to feed my monkey. While I was at Walmart I grabbed some Del Monte Mandarin Orange Fruit Cups to add to the sorbet. There’s also a coupon this month in Women’s World magazine, First For Women and Parade magazine for 50 cents off Del Monte Fruit Cups, so you can get them at a discount! Every monkey needs mandarin orange slices don’t they? I already had some over ripe bananas at home on the counter, and a can of coconut milk in the pantry at home.

I finished the trip by picking up some food for another member of our zoo by tossing a bag of Kibbles ‘n Bits, and Milo’s Kitchen Dog Snacks in the cart. Right now if you purchase two of these of the participating pet products you get a coupon for $4 off of your We Bought A Zoo movie purchase.

Here’s a list of some of the participating products to look for:

  • 40 lb bags of Kibbles N’ Bits
  • 13.5 lb Meow Mix Tender Centers
  • 24 lb Meow Mix Original
  • All large sizes of Milo’s Kitchen Dog Snacks
  • 75 oz size Milk-Bone Dog Biscuits

I grabbed what we needed and headed for the checkout!

When I got home I whipped up some Monkey Sorbet so we’d have it when we were ready to watch the movie later. Here’s the recipe if you’d like to make it for your zoo sometime:

Monkey Sorbet

  • 1- 4 pack Del Monte Mandarin Orange Fruit Cups (Save the cups)
  • 3-4 over ripe bananas
  • 1 can Coconut Milk

1. Throw all the ingredients into a food processor or blender.

Process until smooth.

2. Once all the ingredients are blended, pour them into individual serving cups. The cups the Mandarin Oranges came in work great! You’ll still need a couple extra cups.

3. Place all the cups on a cookie sheet and set them in the freezer. Check on the sorbet cups after about an hour and stir them up.

4. Leave them in the freezer for another hour or so then they should be ready for the movie! If you leave them too long and they freeze too hard, just set them out on the counter for about 15-20 minutes to soften up!

Before we started the movie our dog Emily came in for a pre- movie snack. I took this photo with my cell phone, because when she hears the beep of the camera focusing she runs and hides. Crazy dog, I know, but we love her anyway!

We really enjoyed the movie, and our Monkey Sorbet. I think my son related a little to the boy in the movie since they’re about the same age, and he’s had a few of the same “growing pains” lately. There is some language in the movie that may be in appropriate for younger children, depending on your household. There’s not much, and it’s in context with the movie.

The movie is a little sad at times, I think I even had tears in my eyes once or twice, but it has a good message. It’s also based on a true story about a real zoo. I didn’t know that until I watched the movie. Overall I thought it was a great family film, and I’d definitely recommend checking it out.
