Fun Turkey Cupcake Idea

by Linette

These turkey cupcakes would make a great centerpiece for your Thanksgiving dessert table. Let the kids help you make them, and they’ll have a blast showing family and friends, and telling them about all the fun they had creating the turkeys from cookies.

Fun Turkey Cupcake’s How To

Materials:

  • Nutter Butter Cookies (one per cupcake)
  • Double Stuff Oreo Cookies (one per cupcake)
  • Cupcakes
  • Chocolate Decorator Icing
  • Glue
  • Brown Card Stock
  • Scrap of yellow card stock
  • Tube of red decorator icing
  • Tube of yellow decorator icing
  • Tube of black decorator icing
  • Candy Corn (about 8 per cupcake)
  • Wide round decorator tip (optional)
  • Pastry bag (or plastic bag)

Instructions:

1. Bake the cupcakes according to the package or recipe directions, and set them aside to cool.

2. While the cupcakes are cooling cut 1 strip of brown cardstock about 1 ¼ inch by 10 inches, to wrap the cupcake for the turkey body.

3. Cut 2 turkey feet for each turkey from the yellow card stock. Make the leg about 1 inch tall, with a triangle at the bottom. Then cut an upside down “w” to make the turkey’s toes.

4. Glue the 2 turkey feet to the center of the brown card stock strip, and set it aside to dry.

5. Add about 8 pieces of candy corn to the Oreos, so the tips of the candy corn are going between the layers into the center of the cookie and the wide end of the corn is sticking out to look like the turkey’s tail (see photo). Put the candy corn about 2/3 of the way around the outside of the cookie.

6. Add a turkey face to the Nutter Butter cookies. Using the yellow decorator icing, pipe a small bit onto the top center of the cookie (see photo), then lift up while you’re still squeezing, and release to make a beak.

7. Add a gobbler with the red decorator icing, start squeezing icing just above the beak, around one side of the beak, then squeeze more icing just below to make the red part around the turkey’s beak.

8. Use black decorator icing to make two eyes above the beak.

9. Measure the brown strip around one of the cupcakes, and glue, or tape it in place to make a wrap around the cupcake with the turkey legs in front.

10. Ice the cooled cupcakes with chocolate icing. Use a wide round decorator tip, or cut a hole in the corner of a plastic bag, to pipe a thick round tube of icing on top of the cupcakes (thick enough you can insert the cookies).

11. Assemble the cupcakes, by first inserting the cupcake into the brown wrap, then inserting the Oreo into the icing in the back of the cupcake for the tail, and the Nutter Butter into the icing in the front for the head (see photos).

Kid’s Fun Tip:

Make everything up ahead of time, have the heads, tails, cupcakes, and wraps assembled, then let the kids have fun assembling everything together at your Thanksgiving party.
