Elmer’s Holiday Project~ Making Frugal Gifts Under $10 #GlueNGlitter #cbias #elmersholiday

I wanted to make a gift for my nieces. Something they could use, but something not too difficult to create since it’s so last minute. We also have a spending limit of $10, so I decided I would recreate this really cool burlap bulletin board I saw at Ballard Designs: Burlap Message Board. I wanted to make it just a touch more girly.

So I headed out to Walmart to see if I could find the materials I needed. I headed for the craft section.

It’s my favorite! Especially the memory making supplies. I thought some of them may work well for my project.

I’ve been thinking about buying the X-ACTO Decorative Shapes Templates, and I decided they’d be perfect to add a little something to the project.

I also bought a pair of scissors, because my craft scissors are really old, and don’t work that well any more.

I needed something to hold my project together so I bought some Elmer’s Spray Adhesive, and Craft Bond Double Sided Scrapbooking Tape to reinforce the edges.

When I got back home it was time to assemble the bulletin board project.

Materials and tools used to create 2 bulletin boards:
X-ACTO Decorative Shapes Templates
Craft Bond Double Sided Tape
Elmer’s Spray Adhesive
1/2 yard burlap
Cork board
Scrap piece of card stock
Push pins

Instructions:

1. The cork board I bought was very thin (about 1/4 inch thick), so I decided to double it up for this project. There were 4 cork boards in the package, so I can still make two message boards with one pack. I used the spray adhesive to stick the two boards together. I had to spay the adhesive on fairly heavy to get them to stick.

2. Next I cut the burlap a couple inches larger than the cork board square all the way around. Then I reinforced the edges with Elmer’s Double Sided Scrapbooking Tape, to help make everything stick together. I sprayed the front of the cork board with spray adhesive before wrapping the burlap around it.

3. I trimmed the corners a little on the back, so they wouldn’t be too thick and bulky. Just be careful you don’t trim too much!

4. I looked at all the decorative templates, then decided on a flower. You could decorate your burlap bulletin board however you want.

5. I traced around the flowers, then cut them out.

6. I used some thumb tacks I had from an old chair to secure the flowers to the board.

I made 2 bulletin boards, one for each of my two neices.
Price breakdown for materials for one board:
1/4 yard burlap~ $1.49
Corkboard~ $2.97
Double Sided Tape~ $2. 50
Adhesive spray~ $1.99
Scrap of cardstock~ Pennies

Total around $8.95 per board when the cost is split between boards.

The cost was well under $10, and I was very pleased with the results! I hope my nieces like them! I might have to make one for myself now!
