5 Fun Baseball Cupcake Ideas

My son is a big baseball fan. During the season I think he lives and breathes baseball. It was even the theme of one of his birthday parties a couple years ago. I made baseball cupcakes with the Wilton mini ball pan, I wrote them up here:

Fun 4th Of July Cake and Cupcake Ideas

I made a couple 4th of July cakes and cupcakes for AmazingMoms, and for some of my other blogs. They’re fun ideas you can make with your kids, or for your 4th of July party or cookout. I thought I’d share them here too so they’re all in one place!

First up here’s a 4th of July Cupcake Flag Recipe made with mini cupcakes. This was super easy to make! You just swirl the cupcakes with icing, and add some stars.

Here’s a fun idea I wrote up for AmazingMoms for a 4th of July cake, Uncle Sam’s Hat in 3D. This cake is really easy to make, it just requires one decorating tip, and two different sizes of round cake pans. It does take some time to decorate, but it’s not hard to do. Sand Bucket Cupcake Wraps

If you’re heading for the beach this summer, or if your planning a beach theme birthday party, here’s a fun easy idea for a sand bucket cupcake wrap. I made the wrap with card stock, and the shovel handle with gum paste, but you could easily cut the shovel handle out of card stock too, and glue it to the toothpick.

Sand Bucket Cupcake Wrap Instructions:

Materials:

Card stock in your choice of color
Gum paste
Food color (to color the gum paste)
Toothpick
Icing
Graham crackers (one square per cupcake)
Cupcakes made from your favorite recipe or mix

Instructions:

1. A day or two before you want to make the cupcakes, shape shovel handles out of gum paste, once the handle is shaped, insert a toothpick into the end of the handle to help support it in the cupcake (see photo). Set the handles aside to dry for several hours or a day.

2. Crush the graham crackers and set them aside. You’ll need one graham cracker square per cupcake.

3. Ice the cupcake, then sprinkle the top with the crushed graham crackers to make it look like sand, and set the cupcakes aside.

4. I used giant cupcakes to make my sand buckets. For the larger size cupcakes you’ll need a 1 3/4″ strip cut from cardstock for each cupcake for the bucket wrap. If you’re using regular cupcakes, you’ll want to make the strip about 1 1/2″ tall.

5. Wrap the strip around the cupcake and glue it in place. Hot glue works well, but if you use regular glue, paper clips can hold the wraps in place until the glue dries.

6. To cut a bucket handle measure the top of the cupcake and cut a half circle with the inside diameter the same width as your cupcake. I traced around a small sugar bowl and it was exactly the right size for a giant cupcake.

7. Cut a small slit in each side of the cupcake wrap. Insert the handle into the slits.

8. Insert the toothpick part of the bucket handles into the cupcakes and you’re finished!

You can make your sand bucket wraps and your shovel handles in any color.

Have You Seen The New Cricut Cake?

I’m a huge Cricut fan. I already own the Cricut Expression, several cartridges, and the awesome design software to design my own scrapbook cutouts. Now I’m super excited about the new Cricut Cake!

Cricut Cake just came out, so it’s brand new, but I’m already making room on my kitchen counter for one! This new Cricut machine is specifically designed for decorating cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other confections. According to the demo it can also cut other foods of about the same consistency as fondant, such as tortillas, and some cheeses if they’re sliced thin enough. That opens up tons of possibilities for fun food!

Cricut Cake is specially designed with food-safe materials for cake decorating and food needs. It has food-safe tools and accessories.

Flip-Flop Beach Cupcakes

I’ve had a flip flop chocolate mold for quite a while now, so this weekend I decided it would be fun to actually make something with it. So I made these flip flop beach cupcakes.

Flip Flop cupcakes would be a fun idea for a beach party, or even a girl’s overnight or spa party. You could even make the flip flops, and the crush the graham crackers ahead and let the girls assemble the cupcakes themselves at the party.

Materials:

Flip Flop Candy Mold
Your favorite cupcake decorator icing colored blue
Cupcakes made from your favorite mix or recipe
Chocolate Melting Wafers
Crushed graham crackers (about 1 square per cupcake)

Instructions:

1. Bake the cupcakes according to the mix or recipe instructions.

2. While the cupcakes are baking and cooling, melt the chocolates according to the package instructions. Most can be melted in a bowl in the microwave for 15-20 seconds at a time, until they’re melted.

3. To make the flip flop strap a different color, use a pastry bag with a small round tip, or Wilton Squeeze Bottles to pipe a thin line of chocolate on the strap of the shoe, before you fill the rest of the chocolate mold. If you have a delicate hand, you could also use a food paint brush to brush the chocolate into the strap. You can see my hand wasn’t always steady!

4. Fill in the rest of the mold with a different color of chocolate, and set the mold aside to let the chocolate cool and harden.

5. Color your favorite decorating icing blue, for the ocean, and ice your cupcakes once they’ve cooled.

6. Use a rolling pin to crush graham crackers for the sand. You can also use coarse sugar for a white sand beach.

7. Sprinkle the crushed graham crackers over half of the cupcake, then insert the chocolate flip flops, and you’re done.

You could also add one of those cute cocktail parasols or some chocolate sea shells for an extra finishing touch.

These cupcakes would be a ton of fun for a Summer beach party, or a flip flop fun party.

Make a Cross Cake~ Instructions and Photos

I made a cross cake for my nephew’s First Communion last weekend. This cake would also be great for a Baptism, or for Easter. I know I’m posting it a little late, but if I wait I’m afraid it will get lost in my sea of photos, and be totally forgotten about by next spring.

I think the cross cake turned out really well. It was for my nephew, so the only request my sister had was no pink. She has a horror story from a past cake she ordered from a grocery store bakery arriving in pink in yellow, after she requested tan. So I decided to make the cake in blue.

How To Make a Cross Cake

Materials (click item to view details):

Instructions:

1. Bake your cake according to the recipe or mix directions. The Wilton cross cake pan fits one cake mix perfectly. Spray the pan with no stick cooking spray with flour, and pour in the batter.

2. Once the cake is baked, remove it carefully from the pan by flipping it onto a cooling rack. Place the rack over the pan and flip the whole thing over. Then gently lift the pan.

3. While your cake is baking and cooling color a small amount of fondant blue (about the size of a golf ball). Use a toothpick to apply a small amount of blue food color to the fondant, then work the color in by pushing, pulling and twisting the fondant until the color is all through. Keep adding blue food color and working it in until the fondant is the desired shade of blue.

4. Use the fondant roller and a fondant mat to roll out the fondant. If the fondant is sticking use a small amount of vegetable oil on the mat or the roller. Use the guides on your roller to set the thickness. For these tiny flowers I usually use the thinnest guide.

5. Using a small blossom fondant cutter cut out about 30 flowers. Use a tiny bit of vanilla in the middle of the flower to secure a sugar pearl for your flower center. You can apply the vanilla with a small paint brush (used only for food), or with the end of a toothpick. Clear vanilla works best. Place one sugar pearl on each flower.

6.Measure and cut a sheet of cardboard to fit the cake, or use the back of a large baking sheet, and cover it with cake foil.

7. Use a bread knife or a cake leveler to cut the top of the cake off so it is level, then carefully flip the cake onto the covered cardboard.

8. Set the flowers aside to dry while you ice your cake using your favorite decorator icing. Here’s my favorite recipe: Butter Cream Icing.

9. Reserve a small amount of icing in a bowl. Add royal blue food coloring to the rest of the icing until it is the desired shade of blue.

10. Color the reserved icing with green food coloring for the vines and leaves.

11. Ice your cake with the blue icing. I usually apply a thin layer of icing first, to seal in the crumbs. Then I apply a second layer of icing.

12. Once the cake is iced use the #4 round decorating tip and the green icing in a decorator bag to make vines on your cake. Start at the base of the cross and go up.

13. Next add your flowers to the ends of the vines, or where vines intersect. Place 2 or 3 flowers at each spot.

14. Use the #67 leaf tip on a decorator bag filled with green icing to make small leaves coming out from under each of the flowers. Apply a small amount of pressure to the decorator bag, then pull forward and release the pressure. Don’t worry if each leaf isn’t perfect.

15. Use the Wilton #21 star tip and a decorator bag to make a shell border around the base of the cake. You can color some icing a little darker blue, if you’d like the border to be darker than your cake. Make the shell border by applying pressure to the decorator bag while you have the tip down next to the base of the cake. Let the icing build up a little, then pull the tip up and forward. If you’ve never made a border before you may want to practice on a small piece of foil until you get the hang of it.

Like I said above this cake would be wonderful for a First Communion, Baptism, or for an Easter brunch.

Fishing Pole- Fish Cupcakes

I made these super easy and super cute fish cupcakes for my dad’s birthday this weekend, but they would also be really fun for a kid’s fishing party.

Here’s how I made the fishing cupcakes:

Materials:

Cupcakes! Baked and cooled.
Your favorite cake decorating icing.
Toothpicks
Blue or Blue-Green card stock
String or embroidery floss
Blue sprinkles (optional)

Instructions:

Start by cutting out some tiny little fishes from card stock. You can make a pattern, then trace around it for each fish, but I just cut them freehand, so each fish is a little different. Make the fish about 1/2″ long. One fish for each cupcake. I used blue card stock, but if I made them again I would make some with a blue-green card stock so they’d show up better on the cupcakes.
Draw tiny mouths and eyes on your fish with a fine point marker.

To make the fishing pole, cut a small piece of string (about 1/2 to 1″ long), and glue the tip of the string to the tip of a toothpick. All you need is a tiny dot of glue.
Glue the other end of the string to your fishes mouth. Then set the whole thing aside to dry.

Make your cupcakes from your favorite recipe, or box mix, then let them cool.
Use your favorite cake decorating icing, and ice the cupcakes. I used a Wilton star tip to swirl around the cupcakes and make a little blue wave, but you can just ice them the old fashioned way.
Add some blue sprinkles, just for extra bling.
Insert the bottom of the toothpick into the cupcake and you’re done!

These would be fun and simple for a birthday party, or let the kids help you make them for dad on Father’s Day! The kids all loved the little fishes and poles, and took them home to save for later.

I’m always ready for spring to get here! One of my favorite holidays of the year is Easter. I love all the cute Easter cakes and cupcake ideas that are out there, so I thought I’d round up a few of my favorites to share with you this week. Maybe one of them will inspire your Easter baking this week.

1. PartyBluPrints invites you to make a Mr. Bunny cake in five easy steps. I always love easy!

2. At Amazing Moms I wrote up the instructions for this pink Easter Basket Cake.

3. Celebrate It has an adorable Brown Easter Bunny Cake outlined in pink.

Spring Jelly Bean Flower Cupcakes

I have a super simple spring cupcake idea for you. It’s also a really great way to use up some of those extra jelly beans you get for Easter this year.

What’s more fun than brightly colored jelly bean flowers on top of your cupcakes?

Jelly Bean Spring Flower Cupcakes

Materials:

Jelly beans
Green Fondant (or white fondant and green food color)
Leaf fondant cutter
Toothpicks
Green food color
Wilton tip #233
Decorator bag
Buttercream icing
Cupcakes

Instructions:

1. A day before you’re going to make your Jelly bean flower cupcakes, paint several toothpicks with green food color and set them aside to dry. You’ll need about 3 toothpicks for each cupcake you plan to make.

2. Bake your cupcakes according to your recipe or mix directions and set them aside to cool.

3. While your cupcakes are baking and cooling, color a piece of fondant green, by dipping an end of a toothpick into the green food color then touching it to the fondant. Work the green food color into the fondant by pulling and stretching the fondant with your hands until the color is worked through.

4. Roll the fondant with a fondant roller, on wax paper or a plastic mat until the fondant is about 1/8″ thick. Use the leaf cutter to cut out the leaves. You’ll need about 6 for each cupcake (2 for each jelly bean flower).

5. Wrap the base of the leaf around the green toothpicks. Wrap one or two leaves around each toothpick, then have an adult carefully push a jellybean onto the end of the toothpick. Do this carefully, and don’t push too hard.

6. Lay your jelly bean flowers aside to dry for a couple minutes while you ice the cupcakes.

7. Ice the cupcakes using a Wilton #233 decorating tip and a pastry bag, with some green decorator icing. If your icing is white, tint it green with a little food coloring.

8. Put the tip inside the pastry bag so the end is sticking out the bottom of the bag, then add the icing.

9. Hold the tip just above the top of the cupcake and gently squeeze the bag. When the icing starts to come out raise the tip slightly, then release the pressure and lift the tip away. Move over just a little and repeat the process until the top of your cupcake looks like a field of grass.

10. Carefully insert three jelly bean flowers into the cupcake and you’re finished.

These would be fun for a spring party, or a school Easter party or take them over to grandma’s house.

Easter Basket Cake With Chocolate Eggs

I made this Easter basket cake with chocolate eggs for Amazing Moms last week, but I thought I’d share it here too.

There are two projects in one, you can make the chocolate eggs or the cake separately, or combine them to make the cake pictured above.

I love how it all turned out. You just never know when a project starts as an idea in your head, how it’s going to come out when you actually try to create it.

Spring Ladybug Party Supplies Cupcake Toppers and Wraps

I’m so excited that spring is just around the corner. I was even more excited when I saw these Sweet Ladybug Party Supplies. They’re brand new for spring, and aren’t they adorable! How can I not build a party around these?

I put together this really cute ladybug cupcake topper and wrap, just to go with a lady bug theme birthday party! I used a circle cutter to make the ladybug, she’s about 2″ in diameter. I cut a smaller black circle for her head (about 3/4″ diameter).

I also used a circle cutter to cut some smaller black circles for spots on the cupcake collar, they were about 3/4″ diameter. I cut the collar itself from red cardstock. I made it 1 3/4″ wide by 10″ long to fit around one of the jumbo cupcakes. Make it a little shorter (about an inch wide) to go around a regular cupcake, you’ll also want to make your spots smaller.

I made them in red and black, but you could also use two different shades of pink or blue to match the party supplies above.

If you want a little more detail you can add some googly eyes to your ladybug topper.

If you don’t want to cut out all those small circles you can also use a black permanent marker to make the spots, like I did on the topper. I iced the cupcake with pink, because I had some in the fridge from another project I finished up earlier in the week. Green icing shaped like leaves or grass would be really cute!

You could also just do the wrap, or just the topper if the wrap and topper together are too much for you.

Sweet Pea Cupcake Toppers and Scrapbook Pages

Do you have a sweet pea with a birthday coming up soon? My sister came up with a really cute sweet pea design for a scrapbook page she made this weekend and I thought it would make a really cute cupcake design, so I had to give it a try.

Here are the sweet pea cupcake toppers, and the sweet pea scrapbook page that inspired them.

The sweet pea topper was really easy to make. I used an oval shape to cut out the pea pod, then cut it back the other way to make the crescent shape for the pod (about 3″ long). The peas were circles about 3/4″ diameter. Instead of making double layers for the peas, I outlined each of them with a green marker.

I used scrapbook tape to stick the peas to the pod, then glued the whole thing to a toothpick, and stuck it into the top of the iced cupcake. If you want to make it a little fancier you can make a green wrap for your cupcake.

Here’s the scrapbook page that inspired the cupcake topper, isn’t it adorable? My sister made the pea pod in her scrapbook page the same way I did the pea pod cupcake topper, but she added a second circle to the peas, just a little smaller (about 1/2″) to give them some depth.

The letters were cut with my Cricut Expression Machine, which I adore! She used a royal blue for the background, which I think coordinated nicely and made the colors really pop!

St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Hat Cupcake Wrap

I made this Leprechaun Hat Cupcake wrap for AmazingMoms. It’s one of my favorite projects I’ve made for them so far. I love cupcake wraps, and they’re so easy and inexpensive to make and dress up your cupcakes for a party. I have several more up my sleeve to share both here and at AmazingMoms, so stay tuned.

How To Train Your Dragon~Viking Hat Cupcakes

I was checking out the How To Train Your Dragon movie trailer with my son, and I thought it would be really fun to make some viking hat cupcakes to go along with the movie. These cupcakes are super easy to make, and they don’t cost much since you’re making the hat with card stock, and the horns from gum paste.

Instructions to make Viking Hat Cupcakes:

I used the Jumbo Cupcake Pan from Wilton to make some larger cupcakes (I love this larger cupcake pan).
I cut out a band from brown card stock that was 1 3/4″ by 10 inches for the cupcake wrap.
Then I cut another band 1/2″ by 10 inches for a small band to go around the bottom.
I iced the cupcakes with a Wilton Decorating Tip #1Mand butter cream decorator icing colored a light brown.

I made the viking horns by shaping a little gum paste, I inserted a toothpick into the end that will anchor it to the cupcake for extra stability, then sat the horns aside to dry for a day or two. You can also use them right away, but the horns will be bendable.

The cupcakes were fun and easy to make. This would also be a great cupcake for schools that have a viking mascot.

I was always a Minnie Mouse fan growing up, but I never got to have a Minnie Mouse theme birthday party. So sometimes you’ve got to entertain your inner child and put together your own party if you want it to happen, so today I have some ideas to share for a fun Minnie Mouse Party!

Make Minnie’s bow out of fondant colored black, and let it dry for a couple days before you decorate the cake. Cover the cake in fondant, or butter cream icing, then add the fondant polka dots, and fondant mini Minnie Mouses. Add a scalloped border and you’re done.

Pin the Bow on Minnie, use the Minnie Mouse Standup and put some sticky tack on the back of a paper bow. Blindfold the kids and let them try to “pin” the bow in the right spot. The standup doubles as a party decoration when you’re not playing the game.
Play the “Squeaky Mouse” game, have everyone get in a circle and have one person be the cat, and one person be the mouse. The cat is blindfolded, and has to find the mouse as it squeaks every few seconds. The mouse has to stay inside the circle and avoid being “caught” by the cat.
Use a large hair bow to play “hot potato” the person left holding the bow when the music stops is out.
Ahead of the party you can make up some tick tack toe boards on poster board, and sew up some bow shaped bean bags in two different colors (like red and black), then let the kids play “Tic Tac Bow.”
