We’re Having a Giveaway! Unicorn Races from Purple Sky Publishing

Published by Linette under Contests/Giveaways

Unicorn RacesPurple Sky Publishing sent me a copy of a beautiful new children’s book called Unicorn Races by Stephen J. Brooks. Actually they were kind enough to send me two autographed copies, so I could give one copy away here!

Unicorn Races is a wonderful enchanting story with princesses, unicorns, and fairies. Abigail becomes a princes by night, and flies through the sky on the back of a unicorn to a fairy world. The story is every little girls dream. I love the illustrations they’re bright and sparkly (not sure if that’s really a word, but it’s the best way to describe this book). Children really enjoy bright beautiful pictures, and this book is full of them.

Here’s how you can enter to win an autographed copy of Unicorn Races:

To enter leave a comment on this post. You can also earn an additional entry by posting about this contest on your blog (if you post please let me know in the comment section).

Entries will be accepted until Sunday, March 9, 2008 at 11:59pm EST

Entries are open to residents of the U.S. and Canada.

The winner will be drawn from a random drawing.

Good luck to everyone!

If you can’t wait for the contest you can purchase your own copy of Unicorn Races at Amazon.

Kids Dress-Up For Less

Published by Linette under Party Activities

Girls dress upLittle girls (and boys) love to play dress up, and it’s a fun party activity that fits into many party themes. You don’t have to purchase expensive outfits to let the kids have a great time playing dress up.

Here are a couple tips for having fun dress up activities at your party without breaking the bank:

1. Accessorize! It’s all about the accessories right? Get some bright colored boas, shoes, gloves, hats, and costume jewelry. They’ll have just as much fun trying on accessories as they would the whole outfits.

2. Check out some local garage sales or thrift shops. You can usually find gently used party dresses, costumes, and fun outfits at bargain prices.

3. Make your own, or better yet let the kids make their own costumes, or accessories at the party. It can be a lot of fun. Oriental Trading Company, Inc. has a bunch of fun kits you can purchase to make your own accessories. They have magic wands, pirate hats, princess crowns, and much more.

4. Don’t forget to raid your own closet, and your friends closet. Go through the closets to see what you can find from fun shoes, to scarves, think of the clothes from a kids point of view. Throw in anything that looks like fun. Scarves make great superhero capes, and my son loves to wear anyone’s shoes but his own around the house.

Let the kids dress up and show off their creations, or act out a skit. They’ll have a ton of fun, and create some great memories. Don’t forget to capture a few shots on camera, or video.

Another Fun New Theme: Rock Star Birthday Party

Published by Linette under Party Themes

The new Party Like A Rock Star Party Supplies from Birthday Express is such a great theme for tween boys and girls who are into their music. It’s so hard to find party supplies for this age group, they’ve outgrown the character parties, and they may not always be into sports. This gives another fun alternative.

If your tween is into their mp3 player, loves Guitar Hero, or Rockband this is a great party theme to use. You can add to the theme by making cardboard guitar decorations, or music notes. Either one would also work great for cake decorations to match the Rock Star theme.

The older kids would have a good time playing their favorite game, or rocking out with a karaoke machine for entertainment. It would also be a great contrasting theme for a Hannah Montana, or High School Musical Party, where there will be both girls and boys.

My Favorite Icing Recipe for Decorating

Published by Linette under Recipes, Cupcakes, Birthday Cakes

Birthday cakeHere is my favorite icing recipe for decorating cakes, cookies, or cupcakes.

I got this recipe from my sister, and I’ve had great luck with it.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter (softened but not melted)
1/2 cup shortening
4 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
pinch of salt
5-6 tablespoons of warm water

Cream the butter and shortening together until smooth, add the vanilla. Dissolve the salt into the warm water completely. Mix the water/salt mixture into the creamed butter and shortening. Put the mixer on low, and add powdered sugar slowly, mixing constantly.

The amount of water can be increased or decreased to achieve the desired consistency, I usually have the best luck with 6 tablespoons.

Add food coloring to make the color you need, and ice away.
